Quotes for Reflection
Not infrequently, nay oftentimes, the most lowly, untutored, and inexperienced among the friends will, by the sheer inspiring force of selfless and ardent devotion, contribute a distinct and memorable share to a highly involved discussion in any given assembly…. — Shoghi Effendi [1]
Question for Consideration
What are the essential aspects of “Spiritual Preparation and Setting the Atmosphere” — the first step in effective Baháʼí consultation? [2] [3]
Perplexity Computer Response:
In Bahá’í consultation, spiritual preparation and setting the atmosphere form the essential first step that distinguishes the process from conventional debate, negotiation, or political maneuvering. [4] Rather than approaching decision-making as an adversarial contest of personal wills, participants prepare their hearts and minds to engage in a “spiritual conference” in an atmosphere of love and fellowship. [5]
According to the Bahá’í writings, the essential aspects of this initial phase include:
1. Cultivating the Seven “Prime Requisites”
‘Abdu’l-Bahá identifies specific spiritual qualities that participants must actively cultivate prior to and during consultation: [4]
- Purity of motive: Entering the discussion with sincere intentions to serve the common good, free from egotism, personal ambition, or hidden agendas. [6]
- Radiance of spirit: Bringing a joyful, warm, and encouraging presence to the gathering. [6]
- Detachment from all save God: Setting aside self-interest, preconceived notions, and emotional attachments to specific outcomes. [6] 6
- Attraction to Divine Fragrances: Remaining spiritually receptive and attentive to divine guidance. [6]
- Humility and lowliness: Approaching others without feelings of self-superiority or ego, recognizing that no single individual possesses all wisdom. [6]
- Patience and long-suffering: Exercising self-control and composure through difficulties, delays, or disagreements. [6]
- Servitude: Viewing consultation as a sacred responsibility to serve God and humanity rather than a platform for self-expression. [6]
2. Fulfilling the Two Essential Conditions
‘Abdu’l-Bahá sets forth two fundamental conditions governing the consultative atmosphere: [7]
- Absolute Love and Harmony: Participants must be wholly free from estrangement, division, or animosity, manifesting complete unity like “the waves of one sea, the drops of one river… the flowers of one garden”. [7]
- Turning to the Kingdom on High: The group must turn its collective focus toward God, seeking divine assistance, inspiration, and guidance from the Realm of Glory. [7]
3. Opening with Prayer and Devotion
To invoke divine confirmation and create a spiritual tone, consultative meetings typically open with prayer, meditation, or the reading of sacred scripture. [4] This devotional opening helps quiet unruly passions and allows members to see one another “as if in the presence of God”. [8]
4. Framing Ideas as Collective Property
Setting the atmosphere requires a shared understanding of non-personalization: once a participant voices an opinion or proposal, it ceases to belong to that individual and becomes the property of the whole group. [9] 9 Establishing this norm at the outset ensures that ideas can be examined, modified, or set aside purely on their merits without causing personal offense or defensiveness. [4]
Be the Voice of…
Therefore, all souls should consider it incumbent upon them to investigate reality. Reality is one; and when found, it will unify all mankind. Reality is the love of God. Reality is the knowledge of God. Reality is justice. Reality is the oneness or solidarity of mankind. Reality is international peace. Reality is the knowledge of verities. Reality unifies humanity. — ‘Abdu’l-Bahá. [10]
