3. The “Two Pillars” of Social Order

Divine justice is the mechanism by which the world is trained and human society is stabilized. 30 31 32

  • Reward and Retribution: The structure of world stability is reared upon the twin pillars of reward and punishment. 33 34 These pillars are described as “the sources of life to the world”. 35 36
  • Institutional Guardianship: The Universal House of Justice is ordained as the exponent and guardian of divine justice, charged with legislating on matters not expressly revealed in the Sacred Text to ensure the “reign of law and order” in a disordered world. 37 38
  • Structure of Freedom: The Bahá’í Administrative Order serves as the “structure of freedom” for this age, providing the moderation necessary to ensure that the exercise of human agency does not descend into chaotic license. 39 40

4. Rectitude of Conduct

Justice is manifested outwardly through rectitude of conduct, which is identified as a preeminent spiritual prerequisite for success. 41 42 43

  • Attributes of Rectitude: This involves “justice, equity, truthfulness, honesty, fair-mindedness, reliability, and trustworthiness” in every aspect of life—business, domestic, and administrative. 44 45 46
  • Foundation of Virtue: Truthfulness is the foundation of all human virtues; once established, it allows all other divine qualities to be acquired. 47
  • Contrast to Decay: This high sense of moral rectitude stands in clear contrast to the “demoralizing influences” of a corruption-ridden political and social world. 48 49

5. Historical Dialectic: Oppression and Justice

The sources present a historical view where current global trials are seen as a transition toward a higher state of justice. 50 51 52

  • Preparation through Duress: The “great oppressions that have befallen the world” are described as preparing humanity for the advent of the “Most Great Justice”. 53 54 55
