  • It empowers individuals to “see with thine own eyes and not through the eyes of others” and to “know of thine own knowledge”. 30 31 32
  • In a universe of cause and effect, justice acts as the “infallible Balance” where every deed is accounted for, ensuring that “as he sows so must he reap”. 33 34 35 36

4. Rectitude of Conduct

This principle demands that truthfulness, honesty, reliability, and trustworthiness distinguish every phase of community and individual life. 37

  • Truthfulness is identified as the “foundation of all human virtues,” without which spiritual progress is impossible 38 39
  • This high sense of moral rectitude serves as a contrast to the “demoralizing influences” of current political and social life. 40

5. Universal Love and Fellowship

The “religion of God is for love and unity” and must never be the cause of enmity. 41 42 43 44

  • Protagonists are exhorted to “consort with all men… in a spirit of friendliness and fellowship” and to respond to “enmity and hatred” with “love, mercy and compassion”. 45 46 47 48 49
  • This love is the “spirit of life” for the body of mankind and the only power that can overcome deep-seated human prejudices. 50 51

6. Complementary Principles of Progress

Several other principles provide the intellectual and social infrastructure for a mature society:

  • Harmony of Science and Religion: Any religious belief not conformable with scientific proof and reason is viewed as “superstition”. 52 53
  • Equality of Women and Men: This is an “unequivocal” principle; as all are created in the image of God, there is no distinction of sex in His estimation. 54 55
  • Universal Education: The root cause of prejudice is ignorance, which must be erased through educational processes that make knowledge accessible to all. 56 57 58 59

7. Consultation

Consultation is the “axis for individual and collective decision-making”. 60 It is defined as a “collective search for truth” requiring purity of motive, humility, and a readiness to listen. 61 62 63 64 In this process, ideas are not the property of those who voice them but are shared for the common search for solutions. 65 66

8. The Power of the Covenant

The Covenant of Bahá’u’lláh is the “potent instrument” by which individual belief is translated into constructive deeds. 67 68 It protects the community from sectarianism and ensures the unity of the faithful remains unbroken. 69 70 71

These principles are not mere “pious ideals”; they are practical in effect and essential for the “rehabilitation of the fortunes of mankind”. 72
