Quotes for Reflection

The third freedom is that which is born of obedience to the laws and ordinances of the Almighty. This is the freedom of the human world, where man severs his affections from all things. When he does so, he becomes immune to all hardship and sorrow. Wealth or material power will not deflect him from moderation and fairness, neither will poverty or need inhibit him from showing forth happiness and tranquillity. The more the conscience of man develops, the more will his heart be free and his soul attain unto happiness. In the religion of God, there is freedom of thought because God, alone, controls the human conscience, but this freedom should not go beyond courtesy. In the religion of God, there is no freedom of action outside the law of God. Man may not transgress this law, even though no harm is inflicted on one’s neighbour. This is because the purpose of Divine law is the education of all—others as well as oneself—and, in the sight of God, the harm done to one individual or to his neighbour is the same and is reprehensible in both cases. Hearts must possess the fear of God. Man should endeavour to avoid that which is abhorrent unto God. — ‘Abdu’l-Bahá 1

Question for Consideration

Since individual and collective submission to “divine law” curtails oppression, advances “divine justice,” and grants “true liberty” to all within a “social order,” what “spiritual principles” guide this process?

NotebookLM Response 2

The process of submitting to divine law to establish justice and liberty within a social order is guided by a constellation of spiritual principles that reorient the individual’s identity and their relationship to the collective whole.

1. The Oneness of Humanity

The primary principle guiding this process is the oneness of the world of humanity, which is described as the “pivot round which all the teachings of Bahá’u’lláh revolve”. 3 4 This principle establishes that humanity is a single race and a “distinct species,” mandating an organic change in the structure of society to reflect this systemic oneness. 5 6 It requires individuals to see themselves as members of one human family and to subordinate national or personal impulses to the “imperative claims of a unified world”. 7 8

2. Justice as a Faculty of the Soul

Justice is not merely a legal framework but is reconceptualized as a “faculty of the soul” that enables an individual to distinguish truth from falsehood and to “see with thine own eyes and not through the eyes of others”. 9 10 11 12 This principle guides the process of social transformation by making justice the “single most important instrument for the establishment of unity”. 13 14 15 Within a cause-and-effect creation, justice acts as the “infallible Balance” where every deed is accounted for, ensuring that “each man must inevitably reap what he sows”. 16 17 18

3. Universal Love and Kindness

The religion of God is defined as being “for love and unity,” and its guiding principle is to respond to enmity with “love, mercy, and compassion”. 19 20 21 22 This process is guided by the injunction to “hold fast to the cord of kindliness” and to regard the stranger as an intimate and the enemy as a companion. 23 24 Universal love, achieved through the power of the Holy Spirit, is the “vital bond” that binds the diverse elements of the human body together. 25 26

4. Rectitude of Conduct

Guided by a “high sense of moral rectitude,” individuals and institutions are called to embody truthfulness, honesty, fair-mindedness, and trustworthiness in every aspect of their lives. 27 28 Truthfulness is specifically identified as the “foundation of all human virtues,” without which progress and success in any world are impossible. 29 This rectitude serves as a contrast to the “demoralizing influences” of a disordered world and is the outward manifestation of divine justice. 30 31 32

5. Independent Investigation of Reality

To attain “true liberty,” man must be freed from “blind imitation” of ancestral beliefs and the “darkness of nature”. 33 34 35 The principle of the independent investigation of reality allows individuals to use their God-given reason to discover truth, ensuring that faith is a conscious choice and not a product of coercion or superstition. 36 37 38

6. Consultation

Consultation is the “axis for individual and collective decision-making” and the means by which consensus is reached in the pursuit of truth. 39 40 41 It is guided by requisites such as purity of motive, radiance of spirit, humility, and patience. 42 43 44 In this process, members express their views with “absolute freedom” but subordinate their personal opinions to the collective decision once it is reached to preserve unity. 45 46

7. The Power of the Covenant

The Covenant of Bahá’u’lláh is the “dynamic power” and the “potent instrument” by which individual belief is translated into constructive deeds. 47 48 It serves as the “guarantor of the unity of the free,” protecting the community from the “malady of sectarianism” and ensuring that all are enabled to exercise their agency within a balanced relationship between the individual and institutions. 49 50

8. Spirit of Servitude and Humility

The entire process is underlain by a spirit of servitude, where leadership and agency are conceptualized as “expressions of service” rather than dominance. 51 52 53 This requires a “humble posture of learning,” a condition of being “forgetful of self,” and a focus on the “well-being of the entire human family” rather than personal gratification. 54 55 56 57

Be the Voice of…

Therefore, all souls should consider it incumbent upon them to investigate reality. Reality is one; and when found, it will unify all mankind. Reality is the love of God. Reality is the knowledge of God. Reality is justice. Reality is the oneness or solidarity of mankind. Reality is international peace. Reality is the knowledge of verities. Reality unifies humanity. — ‘Abdu’l-Bahá   The Promulgation of Universal Peace | Bahá’í Reference Library.
