 Of these spiritual prerequisites of success, which constitute the bedrock on which the security of all teaching plans, Temple projects, and financial schemes, must ultimately rest, the following stand out as preeminent and vital, which the members of the American Bahá’í community will do well to ponder.   • Subordination to the Whole: One respects the Plan by understanding that the “viability of every cell and every organ is contingent upon the health of the body as a whole”. 11 This means prioritizing the “common weal” over personal benefits or “selfish advantages”. 12

3. Eschewing Adversarial and Factional Methods

The prevailing social system is characterized by “contending factions” and “competing interest groups”. 13 14 A protagonist avoids these by:

  • Rejecting Partisanship: Strictly refraining from political controversies, bickerings, or identifying with systems that are “prejudicial to the best interests” of a united world. 15
  • Non-adversarial Social Change: Seeking to “build the good” rather than being “reduced to combating every apparent evil”. 16 17 This constructive approach causes negative forces to “fade away” through the “positive strength” of the good being built. 18
  • Respecting Authority as a “Nurturing Force”: Viewing Bahá’í institutions not as centers of power to be suspected, but as agencies that “nurture and guide” individual initiative toward fruitful ends. 19

4. Overcoming the “Crisis of Identity” through Oneness

Disunity often stems from a “crisis of identity” where group allegiances (ethnic, racial, or national) become bases for conflict. 20

  • Universal Identity: One respects the Divine Plan by identifying first as a “member of one human family”. 21 22 This involves “purifying the heart” of all forms of prejudice—racial, religious, or ethnic—which are described as a “spiritual disease”. 23
  • Inclusive Association: Behaving with “all-embracing love” and a “spirit of true friendship” toward all people, regardless of background, so that “even the stranger sees in you loving friends”. 24 25

5. Cultivating Coherence Between “Being” and “Doing”

To avoid “discounting others” or acting hypocritically, a protagonist strives for “dynamic coherence” in their life. 26 27

  • Rectitude of Conduct: Ensuring that “inner life and private character mirror forth… the splendor of those eternal principles” promoted in public. 28 29
  • Spirit of Servitude: Reconceptualizing leadership and agency as “expressions of service” rather than dominance 30. This includes a “readiness to listen” and a commitment to “accompany” others on their path of service rather than merely instructing them. 31

By following this path, an individual becomes a “leaven” in the life of their nation—a source of social good that demonstrates a visible alternative to the “familiar strife” of a disintegrating world order. 32 33
