Question for Consideration

In an ongoing process initiated by Shoghi Effendi in 1937 and sustained by the Universal House of Justice since 1963, the worldwide Bahá’í community actively engages in a series of unfolding plans, each designed to address prevailing circumstances, and collectively over time, to bring the vision ‘Abdu’l-Bahá outlined in “Tablets of the Divine Plan” to fruition. How does this process and the plans it engenders influence individual agency and individual responsibility?

2. The Nature of Individual Responsibility

The plans place a heavy weight on the individual as the “warp and woof” of the entire administrative edifice. 17

  • The Sacred Duty to Teach: The plans reiterate that teaching the Faith is an “inescapable responsibility” which cannot be transferred to any institution; in this duty, the individual is “directly responsible to Bahá’u’lláh”. 18 19 20
  • The Individual as the Ultimate Cause: The sources state that “on the individual, in the last resort… depends the fate of the entire community”. 21 22 Without the “wholehearted, continuous and generous” support of the individual, every measure adopted by a National Assembly is “foredoomed to failure”. 23 24 25
  • Financial Stewardship: Responsibility is also manifested through the law of Huqúqu’lláh and contributions to the Fund. These are described not merely as financial duties but as “matters of conscience” and an “indispensable dimension of a life lived coherently”. 26 27 28

3. Cultivating a “Coherent Life of Service”

The plans provide a framework that helps the individual integrate various aspects of life into a single, purposeful direction.

  • Spiritual and Practical Coherence: The plans encourage a “dynamic coherence” between the spiritual and practical requirements of life. 29 30 Individuals learn to “harmonize the many commitments inherent in a coherent life of service,” ensuring their inner life and private character mirror the principles they promote. 31 32 33
  • A Posture of Learning: The plans have fostered a shift in culture where individuals adopt an “instinctive posture of learning”. 34 35 This means they are responsible for acting, reflecting on their actions, and consulting with others to improve their service, rather than waiting for a “rigid formula” from an institution. 36 37 38

4. Moral Leadership and Social Impact

As the community-building process matures, individual responsibility extends to the wider society.

  • Moral Leadership: Youth, in particular, are called by the plans to take “moral leadership” in the transformation of society, refusing to be “swept off course by the world’s unabating distractions”. 39 40 41
  • The Power of a Single Soul: The plans emphasize that even in a disordered world, a “single soul” practicing the principles of justice, fairness, and equity can uphold a standard that gives hope to humanity. 42 43

In summary, the Divine Plan transforms the individual’s role from a member of a congregation to a strategic actor who is personally responsible for the spiritual vitality of their community and the material progress of their nation. 44 45 46
