Quotes for Reflection

O contending peoples and kindreds of the earth! Set your faces towards unity, and let the radiance of its light shine upon you. Gather ye together, and for the sake of God resolve to root out whatever is the source of contention amongst you. Then will the effulgence of the world’s great Luminary envelop the whole earth, and its inhabitants become the citizens of one city, and the occupants of one and the same throne. This wronged One hath, ever since the early days of His life, cherished none other desire but this, and will continue to entertain no wish except this wish. There can be no doubt whatever that the peoples of the world, of whatever race or religion, derive their inspiration from one heavenly Source, and are the subjects of one God. The difference between the ordinances under which they abide should be attributed to the varying requirements and exigencies of the age in which they were revealed. All of them, except a few which are the outcome of human perversity, were ordained of God, and are a reflection of His Will and Purpose. Arise and, armed with the power of faith, shatter to pieces the gods of your vain imaginings, the sowers of dissension amongst you. Cleave unto that which draweth you together and uniteth you. This, verily, is the most exalted Word which the Mother Book hath sent down and revealed unto you. To this beareth witness the Tongue of Grandeur from His habitation of glory. — Bahá’u’lláh 1

Question for Consideration

How does “unity” extend from “oneness” and thereby apply to individual agency and constructive resilience?

NotebookLM Response 2

The principle of oneness establishes the spiritual foundation for a unity that transforms the exercise of individual agency and provides the motive power for constructive resilience. According to the sources, oneness is not a mere ideal but a “spiritual truth” that confirms humanity is a “single race” and a “distinct species”. 3 4 5 This spiritual reality extends into the human world as a “complete reconceptualization of the relationships that sustain society,” where unity is the “pivot” around which all teachings revolve. 6 7 8

The Extension from Oneness to Unity

The sources explain that oneness begins with the “unknowable Essence” of God, Who is reflected in the “mirror” of His Manifestations and subsequently in the reality of every human soul. 9 10 11 12 Because all human beings derive their inspiration from “one heavenly Source,” the inherent oneness of the Creator mandates the organic unity of the human race. 13 14 15 This unity is defined as “unity in diversity,” where the “diversity of the human family” does not contradict its oneness but “endows it with richness”. 16 17

Application to Individual Agency

Individual agency—the “highest expression of the free will” endowed by the Creator—is given purpose and direction through this framework of unity. 18 19 The sources establish that agency is not an “unfettered freedom” or a “struggle for power,” but is “tempered with mutual consultation and sacrifice” for the common weal. 20 21 22 23

  • Subordination to the Whole: The Bahá’í conception of social life is based on the “subordination of the individual will to that of society,” where the individual is not lost in the mass but finds “completeness in being at one with humanity”. 24
  • The Body Analogy: Just as the “cell, every organ, every nerve” in a human body has a part to play in the health of the whole, individual agency is the “power of action” that is “unlocked” through initiative to support a “unified constructive effort”. 25 26 27
  • Protagonism: Individuals are called to be “protagonists of their own development,” using their “God-given capacity” to contribute to a “society-building power”. 28 29 30 31

Relation to Constructive Resilience

Constructive resilience is the practical expression of this unity-centered agency when it encounters oppression or “destructive forces”. 32 It is a “disciplined reaction” that refuses to let the heart be “defiled with hatred, rancour, or vengeance”. 33 34 35

  • Building the Good: Resilience is “constructive” because it focuses agency on “the building of the good,” which has such “positive strength” that it causes evils to “fade away”. 36
  • Service as Resilience: In response to “enmity and hatred,” the individual exercises agency to “offer love and show mercy and compassion,” thereby “building unity” in the face of fanaticism. 37
  • Rejecting Victimization: Those who practice constructive resilience “reject the label of victim” and instead draw on the “highest reservoirs of solidarity and collaboration” to advance as a “living entity”. 38
  • Collective Vitality: Even when formal leadership is removed, the community continues to manage its affairs through “individual initiative” and “group consultation,” demonstrating that its “unity” and “solidarity” remain unbroken. 39

In summary, oneness provides the spiritual identity of the individual as a noble servant of God, unity provides the social goal for their actions, and constructive resilience is the method by which they use their agency to build a “just and peaceful world” regardless of the hardships they face. 40 41

Be the Voice of…

Therefore, all souls should consider it incumbent upon them to investigate reality. Reality is one; and when found, it will unify all mankind. Reality is the love of God. Reality is the knowledge of God. Reality is justice. Reality is the oneness or solidarity of mankind. Reality is international peace. Reality is the knowledge of verities. Reality unifies humanity. — ‘Abdu’l-Bahá   The Promulgation of Universal Peace | Bahá’í Reference Library.
